In 1977, two years after Russia and China had engaged in germ warfare and destroying most of mankind, U. S. Army scientist Robert Neville, who had immunized himself, is practically alone in the city of Los Angeles, except for a group of albino-like survivors, led by a former newscaster, now calling himself Matthias, who had predicted the destruction, His group , sensitive to light and heat, are bent upon smashing all remnants of the prior civilization, especially Neville.
Due to an experimental vaccine, Dr. Robert Neville is the only survivor of an apocalyptic war waged with biological weapons. The plague caused by the war has killed everyone else except for a few hundred deformed, nocturnal people calling themselves "The Family". The plague has caused them to become sensitive to light, as well as homicidally psychotic. They believe science and technology to be the cause of the war and their punishment, and Neville, as the last symbol of science, the old world, and a "user of the wheel", must die. Neville, using electricity, machinery, and science attempts to hold them at bay.
Charlton Heston seems to have a habit of dying in science fiction films. He died in &quot;Beneath the Planet of the Apes&quot; (and Tim Burton&#39;s ill-gotten remake of &quot;Planet of the Apes&quot; where he ironically cameos as an ape), he presumably dies in &quot;Soylent Green&quot; and he dies here. Heston - whom, if you catch him at the right angle, looks like a more slender version of Arnold Schwarzenegger - excelled in films like &quot;Ben-Hur&quot; and &quot;The Ten Commandments&quot; but he occasionally feels out of place in films that are set elsewhere. Here, he feels kind of like Han Solo (who knows, maybe he was the inspiration for Han Solo, along with James Dean) but at least he appears to be having fun in a few scenes.<br/><br/>As others have pointed out, this film is quite cheesy and it&#39;s action sequences aren&#39;t quite as exciting as they should be. One of the few things that actually grabbed me was when we saw the brother of Rosalind Cash&#39;s (you may have spotted her as the representative of the Black Lectroids in &quot;Buckaroo Banzai&quot;) character dead after offering friendship and help to the albino mutants who populate the film. Overlong and kind of depressing, only Charlton Heston&#39;s strong screen presence can carry this film as far as it does. Anthony Zerbe isn&#39;t that good of a villain; it&#39;s hard to believe that old Chuck, with his chiseled in stone, 6-foot-3-inch comic book build, would have any problem beating him up, so it&#39;s kind of hard to believe that Zerbe killed Heston at the end (Zerbe only won because he had the script on his side). Still, this one might be good for a midnight gathering of people.
This movie is old but it proves it stands overtime. Heston did a great job and it was based on a very good book. The only down side of this movie was the limitations of those times could not get the effects it needed to be more like the book and more realistic.<br/><br/>This movie is about a man who is trying to cure a disease that wiped out the whole world except the ones it turned into diseased mutant zombie things. He tries to survive while also doing his best of make a cure.<br/><br/>This is a really good classic movie. They even remade it with &quot;I am legend&quot; starring Will Smith. I like how this one kept the mutants more human like.
If nothing else, The Omega Man remains worth seeing for its remarkable shots of Heston wandering through an abandoned metropolis.

Omega (Ω or ω) is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. Because of its position in the alphabet, it is often used to denote the last or the end, in contrast to Alpha, the first or the beginning of the Greek alphabet. In the case of the film title, Omega indicates that Robert Neville is the last remaining human on earth. It is an infrared lamp. The gun is equipped with an early nightvision scope that detects infrared light projected by this lightsource and reflected by the objects. Preparing the leave Los Angeles, Neville returns to his apartment to pick up Lisa only to find that she has turned and brought the family with her. Neville is captured and made to watch while the family destroys everything in his apartment. Neville breaks free of his captors, grabs the bottle of blood from his refrigerator, and escapes, taking Lisa with him. Although it is still dark, they run outside. Matthias calls to Lisa, and Neville tries to shoot him, but his gun jams. Noticing Zachary&#39;s spear near his feet, Matthias picks it up and hurls it at Neville, severely wounding him in the middle of his chest and sending him reeling backwards into a fountain. Bleeding profusely, Neville calls to Lisa for help, but she collapses on the ground, unable to break her bond with the family. After the sun has risen, Dutch (<a href="/name/nm0467178/">Paul Koslo</a>) and the children arrive to pick up Neville and Lisa. Dutch finds Neville hanging onto the fountain, the water red with his blood. Wordlessly, Neville gives Dutch the bottle of his blood. With his dying breath, he whispers, &quot;Lisa&quot;. Dutch lifts Lisa from the ground and places her in the truck. &quot;Well, let&#39;s move, kids&quot;, he says, &quot;We&#39;ve got a long way to go.&quot; In the final scene, one of the children fetches Neville&#39;s cap from the water and lays it respectfully on the side of the fountain. The camera then pans to Neville, revealing him hanging from the fountain in a manner similar to that of Christ on the cross. No. Matthias does not appear in Richard Matheson&#39;s original novel. He was invented for this film.
